What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the bone and a crown (cap) placed upon the implant. Implants can also be used to help stabilize dentures, both partial (some teeth missing) and complete (all teeth missing).

Implants have been used as a dental treatment since the 1970′s. Dental implants resemble natural teeth and once you have them surgically placed, you may never need to get them removed unless there is a serious emergency.

Whether you are missing one tooth or several teeth, a thorough examination is required to determine whether or not dental implants are a treatment option for you.

Why would I need an implant?

Have you lost a tooth completely due to an accident or injury? You might want to look into dental implants as a treatment option.

Dental implants are stand-alone treatments and do not consider the neighbouring teeth as anchors.

These implants are mostly made of titanium. Once implanted, you don’t have to remove them at all.

What will my appointment look like?

First, we do an analysis of your dental profile and assess the condition of your teeth. X-Rays and tests are conducted to evaluate the number of teeth that need treatments like dental implants. It can take approximately 3 to 9 months for the surgical insertion of implants to heal.

Once healing is complete, the surgeon fits the abutments and the crowns to the implanted teeth. Local anaesthesia, general anaesthesia and sedation may be used on you by the surgeons, depending on the level of your pain.
